Soldiers of the 2nd Getica Infantry Division at the training grounds of Cincu, Smardan and Babadag attending Saber Guardian 17, a multinational exercise, on Tuesday morning marked the 100th anniversary of the Marasti Battle, the 9th Marasesti Mechanised Brigade reports in a press statement.
The event was part of the WWI Centennial programme. The statement says soldiers of the 345th Tomis Artillery Battalion of the 9th Marasesti Mechanised Brigade at the Babadag training range on Tuesday at 03:50hrs, local, fired salvoes to commemorate the forerunners’ bravery as one hundred years ago at the same hour they started off the Marasti offensive.
‘The 9th Marasesti Mechanised Brigade is the continuator of the war traditions of the 9th Infantry Division that fought in the fierce battles at Marasesti, bringing forward the glory, honour and heroism of the Dobrogea troops,’ according to the statement.
The Marasti Battle was the first big victory in the history of the Romanian Army, in which 1,469 Romanian soldiers were killed and 3,052 wounded. The Marasti offensive started on July 11, 1917 at 03:50hrs and ended on July 19 under the command of General Alexandru Averescu.

The General Staff of the Romanian Naval Forces says the exercise is conducted simultaneously in three countries – Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, July 10-22.
