Romania’s Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT) will convene on Tuesday at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, under the chairmanship of President Klaus Iohannis to discuss Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) and its implications for Romania.

“Taking into account the importance of this topic to the European Union and especially to Romania, Romania’s President has agreed that such discussion is necessary inside CSAT,” presidential spokesperson Madalina Dobrovolschi said last week, mentioning the meeting will take place at 14:00hrs.

She also announced that the CSAT meeting will also focus on the recent developments in activating this mechanism, its effects on Romania, as well as the political decision regarding Romania’s possible involvement in the PESCO format.

“The commitment made at the European Union level, both for the operational dimension and for developing military capabilities through multinational solutions, is the basis of these discussions,” Dobrovolschi said.

Iohannis participates on 19 and 20 October, in a meeting of the European Council in Brussels. The meeting’s agenda feature migration, digital Europe, security and defence, EU’s external relations, with emphasis on the relationship between the European Union and Turkey.

The last CSAT meeting took place on 14 September.
