Team Romania wins gold, silver medals at Invictus Games Toronto 2017

Team Romania, made up of Ionut Butoi, Dorin Petrut and Nicusor-Augustin Pegulescu, has won the gold medal in the men’s open compound – heat men’s open compound archery event at the Invictus Games Toronto 2017, while Ionut Butoi has also won the silver medal in the men’s open compound – final gold archery event.

The Romanian Defence Ministry (MapN) said Saturday in a press statement that Butoi was injured in 2008 in Afghanistan. Following the explosion of an improvised explosive device, Butoi came very close to losing his life. He broke his spine and remained paralysed from his waist down and developed diabetes due to stress, now being insulin dependent. He trains in archery, powerlifting and swimming.

Nicusor-Augustin Pegulescu was injured in 2009 in Afghanistan, MApN says. His left leg is amputated, and he trains in indoor rowing, online rowing and archery.

Dorin Petrut was injured in 2007 in Iraq. He has a titanium rod in his left leg, from the knee to the ankle, fastened by five screws. He trains in archery.
