ForMin Aurescu: Poland missile incident shows how difficult the security situation is
The missile incident in Poland shows how difficult the security situation is, but “clarity” about its circumstances is needed and “there is no room for speculation” in this case, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu said in an intervention at the international conference “Romanian Military Thinking – Security Architecture Dynamics in the Extended Black Sea Area in the Context of the Ukraine Conflict and the New NATO Strategic Concept”.
“Last evening’s incident in Poland, on the border with Ukraine, shows us how difficult and sensitive the security situation caused by the war against Ukraine is. We are in close contact with our ally and strategic partner Poland, and it is important that all the circumstances of the incident are clarified as quickly as possible,” Aurescu said.
He also brought to mind that the North Atlantic Council meets on Wednesday.
“The ambassadors of all NATO states are discussing the circumstances of this incident. As President Klaus Iohannis said, Romania stands in full solidarity with Poland and we send our condolences to the relatives of the two victims of the explosion last evening. There is no room for speculation. We must have clarity about the circumstances of the occurrence,” Aurescu pointed out.
Referring to Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civil infrastructure, in the context of the deadly incident in Poland, Aurescu said that he “took note of the statements of President Biden and President Duda, but the fact that something like this happened shows that the manner in which Russia is targeting the civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, in an attempt to weaken social resilience and Ukraine’s will to fight aggression, is deeply inadmissible. Yet I am confident and I think that everyone in this room should trust that Ukraine will continue to fight effectively.”
It is premature to pronounce on causes of incident in Poland
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu considers it is premature to pronounce on the “regrettable incident” of Tuesday evening in Ukraine, as all the circumstances need to be elucidated.
“This regrettable incident last night in Poland, on the border with Ukraine, shows us first of all how difficult and sensitive the security situation created by Russia’s war against Ukraine is. It is very important that all the circumstances are elucidated. We need to find out what the causes of this incident are. That is why today, at this very moment when we are discussing, the North Atlantic Council Meeting continues. All the allied ambassadors together with NATO Secretary General are discussing the data and information (…) that are available. The NATO Secretary General will make a statement after the meeting, to present the results of this debate. It is, at this time, premature to pronounce on the causes of the incident and consequently on the measures that remain to be decided upon by the North Atlantic Alliance,” said Aurescu, on Wednesday, at the Senate.
The Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister expressed his solidarity with Poland and sent his condolences to the families of the two victims.
According to the head of the Romanian diplomacy, the Romanian authorities are in contact with “the Polish partner, strategic partner and ally within NATO”.
President Iohannis: Romania is fully supportive of our friend and ally, Poland
President Klaus Iohannis states that Romania is fully supportive of Poland, in the context of the “worrying news” related to the explosions that hit the territory of this country.

Two people died after two missiles hit the village of Przewodow in Poland, near the border with Ukraine, on Tuesday, during Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, local media reported cited by Reuters.
Firefighters at the scene could not give details, using only the term “explosion.”
The information that there were missiles involved had been broadcast by the private station Radio ZET.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called for an emergency meeting of the government committee for national security and defence, a spokesperson for the Warsaw cabinet informed on Twitter.
A senior US intelligence official told the Associated Press that the missiles were Russian.
The US Department of Defence communicated that it could not confirm the news about the incident for the time being. Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, Pentagon spokesman said information is still being gathered.
The Ministry of Defence in Moscow rejected on Tuesday evening as an intentional provocation the information according to which Russian missiles fell on the territory of Poland, reports Reuters.
He claimed that no strike was carried out on the targets near the Polish-Ukrainian border by the Russian army, and the images of the rubble published by the Polish press from the scene in the town of Przewodow have no connection with the Russian projectiles.
